Originally published in 2019, The Wicked King, the ... Wicked (titled on-screen as Wicked: Part I), is a 2024 American musical fantasy film directed by Jon M. Chu and written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. Wicked tries to tell the story of The Wizard of Oz from Elphaba's point of view, but instead of being exciting or deep, it's slow, boring, and doesn't fully explore its message. The movie wants us to see Elphaba as misunderstood, but it never gives her the strong story she deserves. Wicked (known in full as Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz) is a musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and a book by Winnie Holzman.
It is loosely based on the 1995 novel of the same name by Gregory Maguire, which itself was based on the 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and its 1939 film adaptation.
